Buying a Pram Newborn

A pram newborn is a dedicated stroller designed for babies and newborns. It has a sturdy, deep carrycot and soft walls that are safe and secure.

Safety

Newborns need to be secured as much as is possible. A pram or stroller that has safety features will keep your baby in a safe and comfortable environment during travel. A pram or foldable stroller must include a break that is working and a five-point harness (2 shoulder straps with two waist straps and a crotch belt) and a wrist tether for the person driving it. Verify that the stroller you select meets these requirements.

Find a stroller that allows your baby to ride in the recommended lying flat position. This position is supportive for your baby and prevents the risk of a dangerous spinal curve that can lead to spinal issues. It reduces the chance of SUID (Sudden Unexpected Infant Death Syndrome) or asphyxiation by keeping airways clear. Most prams can be used as early as the time of birth. They have an adjustable seat that reclines into a lay-flat mode for infants. It can also be converted to a pushchair for older children.

The suspension of a pram is important as it will affect how smooth the ride. A pram that has a lot of spring suspension will be more expensive however it is worth the extra expense if you plan to use your pram each day for a few years or more.

Always read the instructions and read the warning labels on your pram or stroller. When not in use, you should place your stroller in a safe area away from potential dangers like traffic, bicycles or other people. It is also important to remove any bags or other items from the handles, as they could cause your baby to become caught or choke.

A stroller or pram should not be left alone with a baby inside even if they're asleep. They can get wriggling and become trapped or the pram could be thrown away and the child might be injured. It's not recommended to hang bags or other objects from the handles because they may fall and hit your baby in the head.

Comfort

It is essential that newborns are able to lie flat, as this promotes lung and back development. Many prams have a carrycot or cocoon that creates a cozy, nest-like environment for your baby and can be easily removed from the frame. Others, such as the egg2's bucket-style seat, do not recline to lay flat, but offer a comfortable ride for your baby.

Some prams come with a separate bassinet or seat for infants. This allows you to easily switch between the sitting and sleeping positions based on the requirements of your baby. It is commonly referred to as a 'travel system and is the very first configuration you should try with your newborn.

Find a pram with two shoulder straps that are ideally padded, and a five-point safety harness. It should fit your baby's body comfortably. Make sure there aren't any gaps or loose areas, where fingers could be trapped. Also, ensure that the buckles are easy for older children to operate. It's also worth considering whether you'd prefer a parent facing pram (i loved this) or not. It's perfect to watch your child, and also helps them feel reassured by the familiarity of their parents.

This is a great way to maintain eye contact with your baby, and stay in touch, particularly when they're sleepy. When purchasing a newborn pram, it is crucial to think about your baby's needs for transport. These are useful for those who have a hectic lifestyle or don't have a large enough car boot to accommodate a pram capsule, although it's important to keep in mind that your child must be old enough and able to sit on their own before you can switch them from car capsule to pram.

Another feature to consider is the possibility of raising and lowering the infant's seat from a low to high setting, which keeps eye contact with them and keeps them close to you. This is something our parent tester found was really useful with her 10-month-old boy! Also, ensure that your baby's pram has a sturdy base and wheels that can withstand bumps and potholes and that you can fold it down with ease and make sure the safety harness is functional that fits comfortably and securely (five-point rather than three-point) and is adjustable as your child grows. You should be able store bags for shopping and changing under the pram (but keep in mind that excessive weight could cause it to topple over).
